Obituary for Richard Benjamin Rothrock Ph.D

On December 13th, Richard Benjamin Rothrock, Ph.D, departed this world for his eternal one. A good and faithful servant of the Lord, Richard was always soft spoken, gentle and forgiving. He will be dearly missed by family and all the people he touched with his gifts of music, compassion and friendship.

Richard (Dick) Rothrock was born in 1937, and lived a full life. He married his loving wife of 52 years, Barbara (Di Gregorio) Rothrock in 1966.

In ROTC in High School and College, he was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and traveled to many bases- teaching Electrical Engineering. He was highly educated with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University, a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from MIT, and a Doctorate in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Washington. A very dedicated worker, committed to whatever task he was assigned to, he would often work through the nights/weekends on problems in order to stay on schedule. He'd written many published papers over the years. He authored and co-authored many professional reports, journal articles, and personal papers at scientific meetings. A researcher and physicist at heart, he loved numbers and nuclear physics. As a true engineer, he was always very precise and very analytical.

His first nuclear job was working on the Admiral Rickover Nuclear Submarine at Bettis in Pittsburgh. Following jobs took him and his family to Hanford National Laboratory (Washington), followed by Los Alamos National Laboratory (New Mexico), and ending his career at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Tennessee). His professional contributions will continue to have a positive impact for generations to come, but they are dwarfed by what he considered his most important accomplishments: caring and providing for his family.

Richard loved music and could play almost any instrument by ear. He shared his love of music by playing for and singing in choirs at the various churches he attended, and playing a piano or his Concertina at local senior living facilities. Watching his hands fly across the keyboard as he happily played ragtime songs and musical scores by ear on his mother's piano is a lasting image that will stay with his family forever. Richard also had a love for fishing, hiking and the great outdoors. Most of all, Richard loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin F. Rothrock and Marguerite Kahl Rothrock.

He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara; his children, Joseph Rothrock, Patricia (Rothrock) Wardrep, Judith (Rothrock) Hilton, and Benjamin Rothrock; and grandchildren, Madeline Rothrock, Sophia Rothrock, Kubrick Hilton, Isabella Wardrep and Addison Rothrock.

A receiving of friends held from 1 to 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 16th at Click Funeral Home (11915 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN, 37934).

A long time member of the UMC, a 'Celebration of Life' Memorial Service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 16th, at the Lenoir City Central United Methodist Church, 301 Hickory Creek Road, Lenoir City, TN, 37771.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to Lenoir City CUMC, St.Judes' Children's Hospital, or RAM (Remote Area Medical).
